VEX Robotics

We are excited to be hosting our first VEX Robotics Club at West Woods Elementary for grades 3-5!  We have big plans for the 2018-19 year with more opportunities for teams to compete.  We will have a theme of PROFESSIONALISM, with the goal of teaching the students how to not only set goals, but to build a sense of ambition and motivation to strive for those goals.

We will have a limited number of slots available due to space and materials.  Students who are interested in participating will be asked to complete an application (see attached) and sit through an interview for selection.  The application must be signed by the classroom teacher, showing that the student consistently follows directions and participates in class, can work on a team and turns in completed classwork.  In the interview, students will be asked why they think they are interested in robotics and why they feel that they are a good candidate for participating.  To be considered, students must agree to the following:

  • I will attend every meeting.

  • I will not quit and will participate in all my team’s competition events.

  • I will work with a team and do my assigned jobs.

  • I will take robotics seriously and behave professionally.

  • I will respect the other members of the club.

  • I will stay focused on the given tasks.

  • I will be picked up on time after club meetings.

  • I will be a role model of good behavior, attendance and classwork in my regular classroom.

  • I understand that after 3 warnings about any of the above, I will no longer be allowed to participate in the VEX Robotics Club

The club will meet every Tuesday from 2:55pm to 4:00pm in the library. Our first session will be on Tuesday, October 16th.  Once competition is over (in February or March), we will meet once or twice and then be done for the year.

If your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader is interested and you feel that you and your child can keep the above commitments and commit to the $100 fee, please have your child complete the application, including your portion as a parent, and submit it to the classroom teacher for endorsement by Thursday, September 20th.   If you are unable to pay the $100 fee, please contact Mrs. McCann. We will conduct interviews and select members shortly after and notify students of the results.

This is an amazing opportunity not yet available at many elementary schools!  Encourage your child to fill out the application and open up all kinds of possibilities!
