Music Standards
The Colorado Academic Standards were recently updated in 2022.
The Colorado Academic Standards in Music
- Expression of Music The expression of music is the process of practice, refinement, and performance/demonstration of acquired musical knowledge and skills to communicate a range of thoughts and emotions.
- Creation of Music The creation of music is the demonstration of learned skills in the composition, improvisation, and arranging of music, using, but not limited to, written notation, iconic symbols, or graphic and electronic representations.
- Theory of Music The theory of music is the understanding of the distinctive language, conventions, mechanics, and structure of organized sound present in all cultural musics. Investigation of cultural music theory allows for a more complete understanding of all aspects of the musical process.
- Response to Music Response to music focuses on the knowledge and perspectives needed to make informed evaluations and critiques of music. It also addresses the historical, cultural, and societal contexts which are often the beauty, heart, and soul of music.

Interpret and describe musical from a variety of styles, genres, and cultures; explain the reasoning for personal preferences and how music is used in society and culture across time. |
You might see proficient students:
- Singing or playing various instruments (e.g. stringed/orchestral, brass or woodwind/band, percussion, guitar, piano, electronic instruments) while exploring different musical styles; responding to a leader or conductor when applicable.
- Planning and practicing for improvement of technique and skills.
- Writing, inventing (improvising), and revising (arranging) rhythmic and melodic phrases.
- Demonstrating comprehension of the language of music by reading, writing (music notation), listening to, and describing the components (analyzing) music.
- Analyzing/evaluating their own musical performances based on a set of self-developed criteria incorporating specific music terminology; connecting music to culture, history, and society as well as their own emotions and lived experiences.
