Assessments
Assessments at West Woods Elementary
Jeffco students take 3 benchmark assessments in Dibels (K-3) and MAP (K-5) each year. Assessments are given in the beginning of year (Aug), middle of year (Dec), and end of year (May).
DIBELS - an assessment of early literacy skills for students in K-3rd grades. Early reading skills assessed are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension.
MAP - an adaptive assessment that provides information for all students regardless if they are currently below, at, or above grade level. MAP is real time data that is aligned to the Colorado Academic Standards. Teachers are looking for performance over time. Scores may decline from one test to the next. One low test score is not cause for immediate concern. The purpose for benchmark assessments is to show student performance over time. Your child's teacher uses benchmark assessments in combination with classroom data to determine instructional next steps.
CMAS - The Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) are the state’s common measurement of students’ progress at the end of the school year in English language arts, math, science and social studies. Students in 3rd-8th grade take the CMAS tests in math and English language arts. Students in 5th, 8th and 11th grade take the CMAS science assessments. Starting in 2020, about a third of schools will administer the CMAS social studies assessments in 4th and 7th grade.

Assessments in Jeffco
Assessments inform instruction and monitor student progress. Assessments should:
- Add value to the student learning experience.
- Engage families in supporting their students.
- Help identify strengths, interests and opportunities for growth for all students.
A collection of assessment results can be used to help set goals, identify priorities and inform equity of access to grade-level learning.
Individual schools determine which additional assessments will support their specific student population’s learning. Each school will select specific dates within the district-provided assessment windows.
Some assessments are required by federal or state law; see information regarding state assessment participation. Families can refuse participation in state assessments for their students. Contact your student's school if you have questions about test refusals.
