Dear West Woods Families,

Welcome to the West Woods! I am ecstatic to serve as your principal in our West Woods community. I have been a part of the Jeffco community as a teacher and administrator for over 25 years. Throughout this time, I have had the privilege of working and learning with teachers, staff, students and families as we strive to prepare our students for their amazing futures. I look forward to engaging in this learning and growth within our West Woods school and community.

“We Are West Woods” is the foundation of our school-wide theme this year. As proud Wolves, we are a community of Kind, Grateful, Creative Explorers, Thinkers and Learners that will ALL strive to be the very best Writers, Artists, Musicians, Mathematicians, Readers, Scientists, Athletes, Friends and Globally Aware Citizens.

As we begin our new school year, the West Woods staff is energized and deeply committed to being a unified community. Our teachers and staff dedicate themselves to providing our students with a safe, positive learning environment that supports their growth academically and socially. We know that the most important ingredient for students’ learning is their classroom teacher. At West Woods, we have an amazingly talented and dedicated staff that work together to provide students with what is needed to support and challenge their learning during the school day. 

In addition, we value our established partnerships with our parent and school community to meet the academic and social/emotional needs of all students. We welcome and appreciate our parent and community volunteers, and encourage you to volunteer through any of the many opportunities that are available within our school community. Be on the lookout for ways you can volunteer your time if you so desire including through our West Woods Accountability Committee and amazing PTSA.

My name is Emily Duncan and I'm the Assistant Principal at West Woods. I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. We are excited for another great school year. There are lots of new faces, staff and students, and I look forward to working alongside everyone.

Prior to being an AP, I taught ECE, K, 1st, and 4th grades as a classroom teacher and was a K-5 Math Interventionist. I also worked as an academic support partner focused on math instruction for 14 schools and served in a hybrid teacher/leader role for 5 years.

A few things about me:

• I live in Denver.
• I am an avid reader. I read at least 100 books each year.
• I am a very slow runner- and it's my favorite way to start the day.
• I have two nephews in Denver who will be in Kinder and 2nd grade this year. We do lots of adventuring together and family pizza Fridays are our favorite.
• My favorite thing about West Woods is our students. We have the best kids around! 

In addition to my Assistant Principal role, I'm also the 504 coordinator for our building. If you have any questions around an existing plan or have questions about eligibility for a plan, your child's teacher will send you my way.
